There are many flooring coverings and options to consider when building a new home, renovating or simply planning to redecorate. Carpet is an ideal type of floor for most living areas outside of kitchens and bathrooms, but be sure to choose the right carpet type for your needs.

Factors to consider include the type of fibre – wool or synthetic, and the pile – cut, twist, loop or plush pile.

The differences in carpet styles are based on the choice of fibres. Level loop, cut pile and loop pile are some of the types which give each carpet a different look and level of performance.

  • Cut and twist piles perform differently from the looped piles in terms of fibre resiliency and stain resistance.
  • Wool carpets have a natural ability to repel spills and stains whereas synthetic carpets and wool blends are treated with high performing stain resistance technology.

Carpet installation is technically demanding and should only be conducted by experienced technicians.

Like carpet, underlay is available in various grades and qualities. Ask your retailer about the options available. An underlay should be firm but comfortable. As a guide, standing on the underlay you should not be able to feel the floor with the heel of your shoe. If replacing a carpet, don’t be tempted to use the existing underlay. It will have the same wear patterns as your old carpet and these will quickly appear on a new carpet.

While sunlight is the most common cause of fading, household chemicals can also contribute to changes in colour. Similarly, high temperature and humidity conditions may accelerate the onset of fading. It can be protected from sunlight by the use of shading devices such as window reflective films, curtains, awnings and blinds.
